Flood and water damage isn’t just from storms. Sometimes a pipe in a basement can spring a leak and turn your basement into an indoor pool! As this water may be contaminated, maybe don’t go for a swim in it. Will your flood insurance cover the damage caused by such a localized flood?
Part of it, Anyway
Flood insurance will cover the costs of cleanup. This includes pumping out the excess water, mold and mildew treatment, trying to dry out what was salvageable and so forth. For other items, you may need to go over your policy. Anything that was an actual part of the basement such as the foundation, drywall, outlets, switches, dumbwaiters or a staircase is covered. Pumps, circuit breakers, air conditioners, fuel tanks and the fuel inside them are likewise covered. If you have an appliance that was connected to a power source in your basement such as a washer, dryer or freezer, they may be covered. Personal property such as furniture or electronics may not be covered nor will generators. Any aesthetic improvements made to the basement such as finishing or extra fixtures will likely not be covered. Any additions made to the HVAC system such as a dehumidifier may also not be covered.
